On the land and the bay
"The land here is good and the bay is full of fish. I have cleared the north field and planted it in corn. The Spanish governor's men came last month to survey the boundaries of the grant. I showed them the creek to the north and the bay to the south. They seemed satisfied."
This fragment, preserved in Elsie D'Olive's papers, is believed to be a copy of a letter written by Dominique D'Olive shortly after receiving the 1787 land grant. The original, if it survives, has not been located in the Spanish colonial records of the Mobile District.
